Life & Style

The foreign fashionista

By Stephanie Trembath

Supporting local Canadian clothing companies is always a good idea; although cruising Robson Street for trendy fashion finds isn’t always in the student budget. Actually, not always is more like never, which is why so many students wind up wearing the exact same thing from North American companies. Unless you’re a dedicated shopper and frequent sales racks, vintage shops, or secondhand stores, it’s hard to look different and dress in style. Unless, that is, you get to travel and save your money for foreign finds. Bonny Stasuk, a student at Douglas College who graduated with her diploma in sports science, spent her last two years travelling and working in Europe. This spring Stasuk returned home to take extra classes here at Douglas, and to show off her foreign finds.

Stasuk was in France for a year working and travelling, and spent all last summer vacationing in Barcelona. “European style is way more original, and I found Paris so inspirational for fashion,” says Stasuk. “While I vacationed in Barcelona I really liked the bohemian style worn there. Lots of colours and contrasting patterns in delicate fabrics create a most eclectic style; I really liked the ‘hippie vibe’ in Barcelona.” In a light blue short-sleeved “chemise shrug” she bought in France, Stasuk says her latest look is modeled after the fashion in Hong Kong where lots of layers in different fabrics are all the rage. “I mean, I don’t live to shop or anything,” Stasuk laughs, “I just don’t like to look the same as everyone else.”

In a cute, comfy, and totally unique outfit Stasuk proved how easy it is to be fashionable and trendy… even for the struggling student.
