Summer courses can be especially stressful when the sun starts to stick around. To take off some of the stress, take advantage of New Westminster and Coquitlam’s upcoming events this July. Most are free, and provide for some relaxation time around your campus’ respective cities.

Westminster Savings Free Swim (July 18)

City Centre Aquatic Complex in Coquitlam is once again hosting its free swim days, courtesy of Westminster Savings. Each free swim lasts from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Poetry in the Park (July 2 and every Wednesday after)

Every Wednesday night check out some open mic poetry at Queen’s Park in New West. From 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the bandshell, host Candice James will lead the night whatever the weather.

“Pieces Within” Exhibition Opening (July 10)

Come down to the Place des Arts in Coquitlam for the opening reception of “Pieces Within.” Enjoy an evening of art and class while checking out Peggy VanderWart Stel’s collection of works. The reception starts at 7 p.m.

2014 Summer Movie series (July 11 and every Friday after)

Every Friday night there will be screenings of films old and new at Queen’s Park Stadium in New West. This year’s lineup includes recent films like Frozen, Muppets Most Wanted, and Despicable Me 2, as well as classics like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Doors are always at 7 p.m. while the show starts at 8:30 p.m.

New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society Shred-A-Thon (July 12)

Have piles of unwanted course material and old essays? Feeling charitable? The annual Shred-A-Thon takes place at Canada Games Pool parking lot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring all your unwanted papers and files, shred ‘em, then take part in the barbecue and entertainment (maybe even go for a swim after)! All proceeds go towards funding the New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society.

Multicultural Fair (July 29)

Head down to Coquitlam’s Spirit Square and partake in cultural fun! Dance routines ranging from Chinese classical to highland will take place, along with Korean drummers and TaeKwonDo how-to’s. There will also of course be an eclectic buffet and prizes. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
