You may have noticed that theotherpress.ca is down. No, it’s not an early April Fool’s prank—over the reading break, our website was hacked.
One of the most frustrating things about being hacked is that it seems so pointless—from what we’ve been able to determine, our website was taken over by some anonymous hacker looking to build some hacker street cred by showing that he could hack our site and make it link back to his hacker Facebook page. Much like when my car’s window was smashed and the thief took nothing but a scratched, burnt CD, this attack probably didn’t significantly benefit the perpetrator—and it causes major hassle for a number of people who will take days to restore our site (and for the hard-working writers, editors, illustrators and photographers whose work is suddenly no longer available for viewing).
Alas, what’s done is done. We hope to have our website up and running in the next week or two, and will take extra measures to avoid being hacked in the future. Dying to read The Other Press? Guess you’ll just have to take extra-good care of that sweet print version in your hands.
