Bhangra festival brings the love

Celebrate culture and understanding

The City of Bhangra Festival celebrates the arts, culture, and dance of bhangra, a form of folk music and dance that originated in the regions of northern India and northeastern Pakistan. The annual10-day event presented by the Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration Society (VIBC) features various cultural and artistic performances in different indoor and outdoor venues across the Lower Mainland.

This year, the VIBC is celebrating its 10th anniversary with the theme Bhangra Love. The theme focusses on the idea of love crossing all boundaries—social, cultural, sexual, religious, geographic—and bringing together its diverse audience through bhangra music, dance, poetry, and arts.

The festival demonstrates a new and different cultural experience where attendees can have fun learning more about another culture. The VIBC will be hosting an upcoming outdoor event with free admission that features live performances from local and international musicians and dancers at the Vancouver Art Gallery on June 6 from 5 to 10 p.m. and on June 7 from 12 to 10 p.m.

Make sure to follow VIBC and check the event updates and photos on Twitter (@VIBC) and on Instagram (cityofbhangra). You can join in the online celebration using the Twitter hashtag #BhangraLove.
