She wore a loose-fitting black dress
her hair pinned up in tight curls
and long legs bare.
She looked out across the divide
their eyes met
—his frantic
hers grey-green and glittering from the light of the moon.
She smiled suddenly
then looked over
as
one of her slippers slithered off her foot and
tumbled
down
blending into the street below.
And without a beat more
she pushed off
and spilled through the air
like an ungainly pigeon with clipped wings.
