At almost 43-years-old, New Jersey Devils’ Jaromír Jágr, became the oldest player to score a hat trick in NHL history. This achievement surpassed iconic legend Gordie Howe’s original record and contributed to the Devil’s 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on January 3.

On January 10, Douglas College’s men’s volleyball team faced off against the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) Cascades. The Royals, coming into the game atop the PACWEST division standings with an impressive 10 wins and two losses, were looking to further their season’s success and shut the door on one of the only teams to have bested them.
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship gold-medal game took place in Toronto’s Air Canada Centre on January 5, with Canada playing against Russia.
By the conclusion of the 2013/14 season, a number of drastic changes had occurred for the Canucks. With new head coach Willie Desjardins taking over and former iconic player Trevor Linden becoming president of Hockey Operations and alternative governor, the Canucks were able to begin the next season with more positive progression.
Canada will be hosting the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup from June 6 to July 5. The games will take place across six provinces, with the finals being held at BC Place in Vancouver.
On November 27, the Douglas College men’s volleyball team faced off against the College of the Rockies Avalanche in their eleventh league game of the 2014-15 season.
Former hockey player, coach, and general manager Pat Quinn (1943-2014) passed away on November 23. The Vancouver Giants, who Quinn co-owned, disclosed on their Facebook page that Quinn had been suffering from a “lengthy illness.”
On November 16, the BC Lions ended their 2014 season with a 50-17 loss against the Montreal Alouettes. With a multitude of team injuries occurring throughout the year—including starting quarterback Travis Lulay—BC Lions general manager and vice president Wally Buono
