The women’s basketball team was a highlight reel for much of their season as they tore through the PACWEST. A lacklustre finish saw them fall from their tip-top form that had been on display throughout the regular season, and they ended up placing fourth at the PACWEST playoffs.
When the men’s volleyball team lost at the provincial championships, there was plenty of disappointment to go around.
Coming into the 2015-16 campaign, many would say that there was a lot of pressure on the shoulders of second-year player Carson Heppell. After being named the PACWEST Rookie of the Year and being selected to the PACWEST All-Rookie Team last year, Heppell came into the new season with a lot to prove.
It was a rollercoaster of a season for the women’s volleyball team. While they didn’t get the finish they were looking for, there were certainly bright points to their season.
It was never going to be an easy weekend for the Royals. Going into the playoffs seeded fifth out of sixth was not an ideal start for the team with dreams of a gold medal. However, if they wanted that medal, they would have to battle up a mountain, and then some.
This week’s OP Player of the Week is Nanaya Miki. Despite her team not winning a game at the tournament, Miki still managed to amass a ridiculous amount of offensive and defensive stats.
The women opened up the weekend on Friday, having earned their bye to the semifinals by finishing second in the PACWEST. They faced the red-hot hosts, the Capilano Blues.
They say that winning bronze feels better than losing gold. While the value of silver is still higher than bronze, at least when you win bronze, you’re actually finishing on a win.
It’s always a bittersweet feeling around this time of year. Seasons wrapping up means the end of months of hard work, but it also means no more regular season games.
It has been nearly a decade since the women’s volleyball team won a set at the Provincial championships. The curse of the sweep has plagued the team for countless years.
